Are You Making the Most of These Harrison County Resources?
Harrison County offers plenty of resources for everyone who lives here. Whether you’re interested in joining a sports league or you want to get outside and enjoy the area, make sure you take advantage of these resources available to county residents.
Harrison County Public Library
The Harrison County Public Library offers more than just books and DVDs to check out. The library also has public computer workstations with access to printing, scanning, and the internet. Adult programs at the library include a book club, wood carving classes, craft classes, and book sales. For the children, the library also offers story time based on age groups, craft classes for children in fourth grade and above, and family story time.
YMCA Harrison County
No matter what type of sports and recreation you’re interested in, you’re sure to find them at the YMCA Harrison County. When you purchase a membership, you’ll get access to the gymnasium, fitness center, overhead walking and jogging track, and a six-lane heated indoor lap pool. Adult sport programs include soccer, swimming, tae kwon do, pickleball, basketball, and ultimate Frisbee. You’ll also find classes for aquatics exercise, tai chi, and group exercise. Youth programs include swimming, basketball, and tae kwon do.
Harrison County Parks
Whether you’re looking to go fishing, take a hike, play a game, or simply get closer to nature, you can find all of this and more at one of the nine Harrison County Parks. Buffalo Trace Park has a 30-acre lake where you can go boating and fishing. There’s also a public beach where you can relax on the sand or go swimming. There’s a 1.25-mile multi-purpose trail that goes around the lake where you can run, walk, or bike. For the kids, you’ll find a petting zoo, three playgrounds, two tennis courts, and an 18-hole disc golf course.
Another great park to check out is the 220-acre South Harrison Park. There’s an outdoor swimming pool that’s the perfect spot to cool down on a hot summer day. You’ll find two tennis courts, two basketball courts, five baseball or softball fields, and one outdoor volleyball court for exciting games. Children can burn off extra energy at one of the four playgrounds. If you want to spend even more time at the park, there are open ground primitive campsites and 29 modern campsites. The campground also includes a shower house, restrooms, and shelter house.
Frederick Porter Griffin Center
If you’re interested in tracing your family history, the Frederick Porter Griffin Center can help. Here you’ll find historical documents that include census records from 1807 to 1930, marriage records from 1809 to 2005, birth records from 1882 to 2006, death records from 1882 to 1920, and more. If you’re doing research on the history of Harrison County, you can find helpful resources for that as well. There are copies of newspapers from 1817 to present, as well as church records.
